Metalworking Fluids
Hydrology Group can provide support for your metalworking machine fluids including testing and remedial actions, treatment and cleaning chemicals and training.
Why?
Because the HSE requires these fluids to be managed safely and to prevent your operators from being exposed to a substance that is hazardous to health (COSHH)
Health risks associated with metalworking fluids
Skin problems – Dermatitis
Many cases of dermatitis associated with exposure to oils and coolants used in metalworking fluids are reported annually.
Breathing problems – Asthma
Exposure to mists from metalworking fluids when machines are in use has led to significant concerns for operators developing occupational respiratory conditions. There are an estimated 1,500 - 3000 new cases reported every year in the UK with at least 20 of those cases being associated with metalworking fluid exposure.
Previous concerns over carcinogens in the metalworking fluids is no longer a concern with more refined oils being used in the production of the fluids.
There is also a potential of microbial growth in the fluids including legionella and other bacteria, and moulds.
Regular testing of the coolant quality for microbial activity and managing the concentrations and general cleanliness of the machines will reduce the risks associated with operating these machines.
See the HSE website for information on management of these fluids and case studies related to previous investigations.
