LEGIONELLA – is a species of pathogenic bacteria that are a common all environmental water sources, like rivers and lakes, but are a serious health and safety concern in the water systems we install in buildings. First identified in 1976, legionella has since become one of the most important aspects of any health and safety management system for all places of work.
Purpose built water systems give Legionella the perfect environment to grow to the large numbers that can make the water potentially harmful to humans. Any water system can be a risk of legionella and therefore it is essential that there is a risk assessment carried out and the correct scheme of control for each type of system is implemented.
In the UK, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has developed a series of documents to guide you on how to manage the risk associated with legionella in your building;
The Approved Code of Practice L8 – Legionnaires disease. The control of legionella bacteria in water systems – is your guide in how to meet your responsibilities under health and safety legislation. A free download is available from the HSE website here;

In order to successfully meet these responsibilities, the HSE technical guidance for specific water system types has been produced – HSG 274 parts 1, 2 and 3 are clear and detailed documents showing the best practices that should be implemented. Download these from the HSE website here;
